Ujjain Prof's killers live it up in jails

It has been seven months since Prof Sabharwal was killed after being allegedly assaulted by BJP-affiliated Akhil Bharitiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) activists at the Madhav College in Ujjain.

I went undercover inside the Ujjain Central Jail and found out, the six accused in the Sabharwal murder are being well looked after in Ujjain Central Jail.

When CNN-IBN's team went to Ujjain Central Jail to meet ABVP activist Sashiranjan Akela — one of the six persons that the CID has charged with the professor’s murder — they were easily allowed inside the jail.

Normally, it is illegal to meet a prisoner, but an exception is made in the case of Akela, who is treated as a VIP.

Inside the prison, the team sees Akela and two other co-accused — Vimal Tomar and Hemant Dube — talking to BJP workers, who should ideally not be allowed inside the jail. Clearly, the police are on Akela's side.
A key witness, Manohar Dodia, confirmed that Akela, along with Vimal Tomar, Hemant Dube and Vishal Rajauria, was the leader of the pack that entered Madhav College on August 26, 2006.

He reveals that ABVP leaders, led by Akela, were actually escorted by the police into Madhav College on the day of Sabharwal's murder.

"ABVP people were brought inside the college through gate no. 2," says physical education instructor at Madhav College, Manohar Dodia.

The CID report says the ABVP was actually tipped off that Madhav College had cancelled its student union elections. "They (ABVP activists) were abusing. Akela said there's no provision to stop or cancel elections," says Dodia.

CNN-IBN has footage which shows Akela arguing with Professor ML Nath, who was responsible for student elections at the College. Just behind Akela, Vimal Tomar can be seen preparing a humiliating assault on Prof Nath. He then smeared Professor Nath's face with muck..

"ABVP people slapped Nath and said it was Prof Sabharwal who cancelled the elections," says Dodia.

Eyewitnesses say that on hearing that Sabharwal was against holding student elections, the ABVP mob waited for him outside the college. "They were gathered outside when Prof Sabharwal left," says Dodia.

Prime witness Komal Singh, in this statement to the CID, also says that it was Akela who spotted Sabharwal and ordered the mob to beat him up.
